American Presidents on Uruguayan Stamps

Six American presidentes are portrayed in Uruguayan Stamps. Here they are.

1. George Washington
  • 1960, March 2, Scott C203-5, conmemorating the visit of Dwight Eisenhower. The stamps show the profiles of José Artigas (Uruguay's national hero) and George Washington.
  • 1975, September 29, Scott C414b. A 0,30 c stamp in a souvenir sheet features again George Washington and José Artigas (Picture 2).

2. John Adams
1976, June 21 (Scott 943). Honnoring the bicentennial of American Independence, a 1976 Uruguayan stamp reproduces the painting of Alonzo Chappel Drafting the Declaration of Independence. John Adams is one of the five persons portrayed there.

3. Thomas Jefferson
1976. Jefferson is also in the 1976 stamp mentioned before (Picture 3).

4. Franklin D. Rooselvet
He was the first American President to appear on an Uruguayan Stamp. A set of three stamps which was issued on April 9, 1953 (Scott 602-604) honnoring Rooselvet in occasion of the 5th Postal Congress of the Americas and Spain (Picture 4).

5. Dwight D. Eisenhower
  • 1960, March 2, Scott C203-5. In the occasion of the visit of Eisenhower, three stamps were issued. The name of the Visitor appears on them. (Picture 1)
  • 1970, July 14, Scott C371. One year after the death of Eisenhower a stamp was issued in his memory. (Picture 5)

6. John F. Kennedy
1965, March 5, Scott 714-715 C269-270. A set of 4 stamps (2 of them for air mail) was issued in memory of Presidente Kennedy. The stamps were designed by Uruguayan artist Juan Boris Gurewitsch (b. 1909).
